Abby and Brittany Hensel’s twin condition is a rare and complex form of conjoinment known as dicephalic parapagus.

This condition is characterized by two separate heads on a single torso. While they share one body below the waist, they have distinct and separate organs in the upper part of their bodies.

Each twin has her own spinal cord, which merges at the coccyx.However, they share a single circulatory system, meaning that what affects one heart can also affect the other.

The twins have a total of three kidneys where Abby has one kidney & Brittany has two kidneys. The three kidneys work together to filter their shared bloodstream, and the waste products are then passed through their shared bladder and urethra.

At birth, they had a third, rudimentary arm which was surgically removed.

From a young age, they captured the world’s attention. They first appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 and were featured in documentaries like Joined for Life and Joined for Life: Abby & Brittany Turn 16.

Despite sharing a body, Abby and Brittany have always been two separate individuals with their own thoughts, feelings, and goals. They each control one side of their shared body, Abby the right, and Brittany the left.

They have learned to work in perfect sync to accomplish daily tasks, from walking and running to driving a car.

Their differences extend beyond their physical control. Abby is slightly taller, and Brittany’s leg is shorter, which has led to subtle physical adjustments over time. They also have different interests and tastes, which they have to navigate as they make decisions together.

The twins have always pursued a “normal” life as much as possible. They attended high school and then Bethel University, where they both earned degrees in education. Their 2012 TLC reality show, Abby & Brittany, followed their journey through college, their travels, and their search for a career.

Now they are fifth-grade teachers in Minnesota. They have a unique teaching style, with Abby focusing on math and science and Brittany on language arts. They work as a single team, are paid one salary, and have become beloved figures at their school.

In 2024, it was revealed that Abby had quietly married Josh Bowling, a nurse and U.S. Army veteran, in 2021. Abby became a stepmother to Josh’s daughter from a previous relationship.
